Rochester Boxer Willie Monroe Jr. Fights for Middleweight Championship of the World on HBO May 16

Rochester, NY- Rochester’s own Willie “El Mongoose” Monroe Jr. faces his toughest opponent in the biggest fight of his career. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will defend his WBA/IBO and ‘Interim’ WBC Middleweight World Titles against the top rated challenger on Saturday, May 16th at the Forum in Inglewood, CA. This championship event will also be televised on HBO World Championship Boxing at 10pm eastern standard time and broadcast to millions around the world.

Most recently Monroe won ESPN’s 2014 Boxing Middleweight tournament, Boxcino, even when he was deemed an underdog. He exemplifies the true spirit of perseverance and takes pride in not only winning, but making sure the world knows there are many more in his Rochester, NY community overcoming many obstacles and succeeding at life. Monroe Jr. is currently ranked #2 by the WBA, #5 by the WBO and #9 by the WBC.

Monroe Jr. recently fought former Middleweight champion Bryan Vera and pulled off the upset by beating Vera in a unanimous decision in front of a sold out crowd at Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona NY. Boxing is in his blood and his great uncle Willie “The Worm” Monroe once beat the great Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
