Willie Monroe, Gabriel Rosado being considered for Canelo Alvarez on May 7

We know Canelo Alvarez will return on May 7, the popular Cinco de Mayo weekend reserved for boxing’s biggest stars. But whom will he fight?

Persons informed of the talks told USA TODAY Sports that Willie Monroe Jr. and Gabriel Rosado are two of the names being considered as opponents. The persons requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of negotiations.

Said Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez: “All 154- to 160-pound fighters are being considered. We will meet with Canelo next week and start narrowing down the field.”

Canelo won the lineal middleweight championship with a decision over Miguel Cotto in November in a fight that cemented the Mexican’s status as boxing’s biggest star. The fight generated $58 million in revenue along with 900,000 pay-per-view buys. Canelo has a mandatory defense due against Gennady Golovkin, but the sides agreed to take interim fights with an eye toward a fall super fight.

It’s unclear at what weight Canelo’s interim fight on May 7 will take place. He’s never weighed more than 155 pounds for a bout, the contracted weight of his last two bouts that netted him Fighter of the Year honors from USA TODAY Sports.

Now, he’ll prepare for a May 7 outing, and Monroe and Rosado appear to be the leading candidates at this time. Monroe (19-2, 6 KOs) hasn’t competed since a May knockout loss to Golovkin, though he showed well in defeat. The southpaw boxed well and even won one round, and could make for an interesting style matchup with Canelo.

The 29-year-old, who is promoted by Artie Pelullo’s Banner Promotions, won ESPN’2 2014 Boxcino Middleweight Tournament.

Rosado (22-9, 13 KOs) had lost four of his last six bouts (with one no contest) but returned to the win column with a close decision victory over Joshua Clottey in December. Rosado, too, has fought GGG, a seventh-round KO in 2013, and is an entertaining fighter, but is tailor made for Canelo. The 29-year-old is promoted by Golden Boy, making this mathcup easier to make.

Whomever Canelo ends up facing, hopefully it’s simply an appetizer to a fall bout with GGG for all the marbles.
